When to run a technical discovery sprint
3 July 2026
Signs you need a short planning sprint before you build, buy, or hire — and what a good sprint should produce.
A discovery or clarity sprint is a short, fixed engagement to decide the path before you spend. It is useful when the problem is real but the solution is not.
Run one when
- You are about to commit meaningful budget
- Vendors are pitching and you cannot compare them fairly
- The team disagrees on architecture or priorities
- You have been burned by a previous build
What you should walk away with
A decision memo, a 90-day roadmap, build/buy guidance, and clear next options — leadership retainer, a delivery phase, or an internal plan your team can own.
